Vobkent (also spelled Vabkent) is a town in Bukhara Region and the centre of Vobkent District, about 28 km from Bukhara. It is best known for the Vobkent Minaret, commissioned by Burhan al-Din Abd al-Aziz II, the sadr (religious leader) of Bukhara; its inscriptions date the work from 1196 to 1198–1199. It stands about 40 metres tall, its brick bands recall Bukhara's Kalon Minaret, and it is on UNESCO's tentative list for World Heritage. The town has textile works, and the district grows cotton, grain and fruit.
