Uzbekistan harvests more than 5 million tonnes of cotton for the first time
Uzbekistan has harvested more than 5 million tonnes of raw cotton for the first time. On 4 November, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated farmers on the result, along with agronomists, water workers, machine operators, scientists and employees of cotton and textile clusters.
According to figures in the message, the average yield on 400,000 hectares reached 70 centners (7 tonnes) per hectare. On almost 70,000 hectares, farmers got 100 to 110 centners per hectare.
More than 3,000 cotton-picking machines gathered 85% of this year's crop. The harvest took 30 to 35 days. In the Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions, cotton picking is now fully mechanised.
The president pointed out that climate-related problems got worse this year, yet the crop was brought in before the rainy season, using the industry's own resources. He said farmers are expected to earn 13 to 14 trillion soums in net profit from cotton this year.
The message also said that reforms in recent years have cut the area sown with cotton by 38%. For comparison, almost 2 million hectares were used for cotton in the 1980s, and yields stayed below 30 centners per hectare. In 2000, 3 million tonnes were harvested from 1.4 million hectares. This means the country now gets a much bigger crop from less land.
There are plans to grow output further. Earlier, during a visit to the Bukhara region, the president set a goal of raising cotton production there to 1 million tonnes within three years. He linked this to supplying raw materials to the textile industry and creating jobs.
