President reviews Bukhara's preparations for major international events
On 3 November, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting in Bukhara on preparations for major international events planned in the city. According to the presidential press service, the meeting looked at how to organise high-level meetings and other large international events to a high standard.
The president said the events should show off Bukhara's historical heritage and its current potential, and should also help the region develop. For this reason, preparations should not be limited to the event venues. Transport, services, security and city infrastructure are to be developed together.
Security received particular attention. Officials reviewed plans to set up modern situation centres. They also discussed using digital technologies to monitor public spaces and tourist sites, manage traffic and fight cybercrime.
On transport, the meeting reviewed progress on a new international airport costing $300 million. It also discussed a 23.5-kilometre road that will link the airport to the city. Other topics included public transport and landscaping of the surrounding areas. Green spaces are to be expanded in ways suited to Bukhara's climate.
Participants said the international events should also be used to attract investment and expand economic cooperation. At the end of the meeting, the president said that facilities and systems built for the events should keep serving local residents after the events are over.
Construction of the new airport in Bukhara district began on 31 May 2024. At that time, the project was valued at $226 million. According to official figures, the current airport can handle 400 passengers an hour, or 1 million a year. The new airport is designed to handle 1,200 passengers an hour. It is being built as a public-private partnership.
During the same trip, the president visited a new tourism centre being built in Bukhara. There, he received reports on preparations for summits scheduled for 2027. Also during the visit, 145 projects worth a total of $7.8 billion were launched in the region.
