Google may cut off Search for schools that turn off AI

Starting in 2027, Google plans to turn off AI features in its school products by default, letting schools decide what to enable. However, schools that block AI entirely on their devices will also lose access to Google Search, as the two systems are said to be too deeply intertwined to separate. The plan has drawn backlash, with politicians such as New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani and former FTC chair Lina Khan accusing Google of acting as an unregulated monopoly.
